Pitch Your Project

Using the skills we've learnt so far, we're first going to start with a couple of writing exercises to help you pitch your most recent design project. This will help keep it fresh in your minds and maybe even refine the narrative and ideas behind it. You can also use the podcast episode by Second Studio Pod to help you.

Let's start with a couple of easy writing exercises. Make sure to think carefully about the language you are using throughout and the flow of the text, reading it aloud as you go.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to pitch your projects, this will be useful for when you need to give context about your work. For now, don’t focus too much on the work itself, but more so the words and language you are using.

1. 🧠 Brain Dump

Start with everything related to your most recent project.
How did your project begin? Was there a small task, element in your brief or a reference you used?
What are the 3 core drivers for your project?
What was the key piece of inspiration, reference or turning point?
Name 4 elements that relate back to the original brief

2. 💼 Portfolio

Now, pick out 10 key pages in your portfolio plus any of the final imagery you want to showcase. You can put this together on a Google Slide or a Miro Board - whichever is better for you to visualise. Think about the pages which are a little more difficult to describe so you can practice these.

Here, think about the following:
  1. What does this page convey? Is it an exploratory diagram or just some filler images, and can you understand the project without it? If not, then that suggests it plays an important role.
  1. How does it link to the page before and after?
  1. What do you specifically want to talk about - and does it relate to the elements we discussed above like inspiring references, core drivers and turning points

Think about what you already have. What did you present for your final crit? Try not to use the same words over and over and think about explaining some of the decisions you made.

Ever thought about starting with your showstoppers first? Your illustrations, renders and final imagery can be a powerful image to begin with if done correctly. Give it a go and break down the qualities of the project and how it ties in with the complete narrative rather than just describing what it is.

3. 📜 Bullet Point a Script

Use the space below to bullet point parts of a script, don't write it out word for word but enough detail so you can refer back to it if needed and edit only 3 times, this is so you don't end up spending a long time editing and re-writing your script.
This doesn’t need to be overly long, our pitches will be around 5-10 minutes long and doesn’t need to be of your entire portfolio. Again, this is totally optional if you would like to practice pitching your projects.
